December Project – Love Birds

One of my newest thread paintings was a pair of love birds. The background is constructed of confetti pieces captured in tulle. After quilting I couched some of Ricky Tim’s Razzle Dazzle thread over it. Next I added the branch and birds freehand cut from fabric. The next step is the thread painting which is the bulk of the work. My final step is to crop and finish the edges with a satin stitch. This piece was matted and put in an 11 by 13 inch frame.

Birds and More

Yesterday I finished three background pieces and eight bodies for the realistic birds.

The day before I added tails and wings and beaks to ten more sets of whimsical birds.  Today I’ve finished up two more birds and added branches to some of the birds.  I have also started the thread painting.  I chose to start with green, as I wanted to tack down all the tiny leaves.  I used either three rounds of free motion straight stitch or a free motion zigzag.  One color down, about 99 to go.

As a diversion I made started and thread painted two tree scares. trees1f

Hoffman Challenge

My quilt “Every Day Miracles” was accepted to travel with the Hoffman 2016 quilt challenge.  The challenge fabric was printed with butterflies on one side. The background of my quilt is made up of small snippets captured under tulle. Many of the butterfly have been sewn together and are 3D.  Insects, chrysalis, and other critters are scattered throughout  the quilt.  The sky background has been quilted with free motion light blue butterflies.

Here are some closeups.

Yesterday, I finished a new snippet quilt. This one was a cardinal in a pine tree. I had intended to do it in portrait in stead of landscape.  (Before thread painting the cardinal)IMG_6841

I forgot until i went to frame it. So without knowing if i could fix it I dare to cut of both ends. I zigzagged a strip of canvas at the top and bottom and covered it all with more snippets, and added snow to the pines. Then i encased the entire picture in more tool and put on a new back and requilted. IMG_6842

Finally framed and ready to deliver. I was very pleased with the result and so was the person who commissioned it.
