Birds and More

Yesterday I finished three background pieces and eight bodies for the realistic birds.

The day before I added tails and wings and beaks to ten more sets of whimsical birds.  Today I’ve finished up two more birds and added branches to some of the birds.  I have also started the thread painting.  I chose to start with green, as I wanted to tack down all the tiny leaves.  I used either three rounds of free motion straight stitch or a free motion zigzag.  One color down, about 99 to go.

As a diversion I made started and thread painted two tree scares. trees1f

New Quiltography Piece

This is the inspiration photo4b resizephoto for piece 6 of the 8 quiltography pieces Quilt Artists of KY are doing in conjunction with the Lexington Photography Club.

I decide to make my piece a monochromatic piece.  I chose blue. I put the picture in photoshop, recolored and then use posterized to reduce the color and image complexity.

Next I chose 10 shades of denim, and made sure to put a jeans needle on my machine.

Here are some pictures of work in progress and my mess.

Finally my finished piece.  I just decided to quilt it with a free motion zigzag and invisible thread.

WIP

Building up my bird stash.  I’ve been working on the bare bones of some whimsical birds.  I have 20 bird sets ready to quilt and ten more to finish.  I also finished two goldfinch and a bluejay, three black capped chickadee’s and three robins ready for thread painting..  I want to get a few more realistic birds cut out and then I should get started on the thread painting.  I am excite about getting started and getting to try out my new Missouri Star Quilting thread.   I am also cutting up snippets to do some small impressionist painting style landscape quilts.

New Birds

Yesterday I started putting together the birds and backgrounds thatI’ve been working on.  I made three new green backgrounds as well.  I have 5 extra backgrounds so today I will start on some new birds.  I will have to remove the birds to thread paint each branch.  I am going to try to do all of one color on each quilt to keep from having to do so many thread changes.  Here are some pictures of the base birds without the thread painting.

My Hoffman Challenge Quilt

My quilt “Every Day Miracles” was accepted to travel with the Hoffman 2016 quilt challenge. The challenge fabric was printed with butterflies on one side. The background of my quilt is made up of small snippets captured under tulle. Many of the butterfly have been sewn together and are 3D. Insects, chrysalis, and other critters are scattered throughout the quilt. The sky background has been quilted with free motion light blue butterflies.
